THE MEANING OF 如意 (RÚ YÌ) — MAY IT GO YOUR WAY
如意 means "as you wish", the hope that things unfold the way you want them to. Not simply that you get lucky, but that your effort, your hopes, and your circumstances come together in your favor.
It is one of the oldest good wishes in Chinese, spoken at New Year and written on gifts for people setting out on something: an exam, a new business, a new job, a plan that is not yet guaranteed. Some things are beyond our control; 如意 is the wish that, even so, the road ahead bends your way.
A meaningful piece for a new job, a graduation, or anyone in the middle of chasing a goal, and a natural fit for a desk or entryway.
