THE MEANING OF 秋 (QIŪ) — AUTUMN
秋 means autumn. Chinese characters are built from smaller pictures, and this one puts two together: on the left, a stalk of grain (禾); on the right, fire (火). Together they describe the season when the fields ripen and the light turns gold. To a Chinese reader, 秋 is more than a date on the calendar. It is the feeling of a year reaching its fullest point, when the work of growing is done and it is time to gather in.
It is the season of the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families gather under the full moon, and of maple hills, cool mornings, and the first evenings indoors. For anyone who feels most at home when the air turns crisp, 秋 puts that feeling on the wall in a single character.
