THE MEANING OF 秋 (QIŪ) — AUTUMN
秋 means autumn. The character joins 禾, a stalk of grain, with 火, fire: the season when fields ripen and the light turns gold. In Chinese it also carries the sense of a year coming to fullness, the point where growing gives way to gathering.
It is the season of the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families gather under the full moon, and of maple hills, cool mornings, and the first evenings indoors. For anyone who feels most at home when the air turns crisp, 秋 puts that feeling on the wall in a single character.
